ECHOES OF THE PAST AT MGM COLLEGE
MGM College celebrated its Literary cum Cultural Day with great enthusiasm on February 9, under the evocative theme “Echoes of the Past, Tales of the Present.” The programme, held in the college auditorium, was a vibrant confluence of literature, culture, and creative expression, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to holistic education. The event was graced by Mr. Alobo Naga, renowned singer, songwriter, and proprietor of Musik-A Academy, as the Guest of Honour. The programme was ably hosted by Mr. Anohika. The inauguration began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Albo Naga , accompanied by Dr.R.K.Behera, Principal,
MGM College; Fr. Gigu George, Administrator; Miss Ahikali I. Jakha, HoD, Department of English; and Mr. Lisathung Ovung, Dean of Students.
This was followed by an invocation led by Mr. David Phom, Assistant Professor, Department of History. Dr. R. K. Behera, in his warm welcome address, highlighted the relevance of literature and culture in shaping identity, values, and critical thinking among students. Mr. Alobo Naga, was then felicitated in the presence of the Principal and the Administrator. A special drama performance by the Sahitya Club (Department of English) captivated the audience with its powerful message on preserving culture and heritage in changing times. The performance underscored culture as a living bridge connecting the past with the future. In his keynote address, Mr. Alobo Naga spoke passionately on the importance of remaining rooted in one’s traditions amidst modern influences. He urged students to embrace and celebrate their tribal identity with pride rather than conceal it. He further emphasized that traditional elements can be creatively blended with contemporary art forms, encouraging students to showcase their cultural uniqueness on broader platforms. His address was followed by a mesmerizing live musical performance, which became a memorable highlight of the celebration. Following the inaugural session, a series of literary competitions—including debate, slam poetry, art, and essay writing—were conducted. The programme then transitioned into a vibrant cultural showcase featuring folk fusion songs, traditional dances, cultural fire-making, winnowing demonstrations, traditional attire displays, and a talent show, reflecting the rich diversity of tribal and regional heritage.
The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Disong Waineikum, MGM Cultural Secretary, and a closing benediction by Nikaho Awomi, MGM E.U. President.
